Subconscious motor functions
The functions of voluntary muscles that we don’t actively think about
Vital functions
The bodily functions that are necessary for life
Decussation
The crossing of nerves from one side of the brain to the other
Brain lateralization
The fact that certain functions are primarily controlled by one hemisphere of the brain
Reflex
A response to a stimulus that is performed without conscious thought
General senses
The senses that are distributed throughout the entire body, such as the sense of touch
Special senses
The senses related to specific areas of the body: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and balance
Taste buds
Clusters of nerve tissue on the tongue that provide the sense of taste
Hormones
Chemicals carried through the bloodstream that produce specific actions in targeted cells
