Q

General characteristics of a homologous series:

A
  1. The compounds have the same functional group
  2. They have similar chemical properties
  3. There is a gradual change in their physical properties as we go down the series from one member to the next

Q

How is petroleum separated in an oil refinery?

A
  1. In the furnace, petroleum is heated and all is turned into a vapour
  2. The vapour is passed into the fractioning column
  3. Lighter fractions have lower boiling points. They are collected at the top of the fractionating column as gases
  4. Heavier fractions have higher boiling points. They are collected at the bottom of the fractionating column
