What is a one-word definition of leadership?
INFLUENCE
What is leadership?
When a person influences others and:
- inspires
- motivates
- directs their activities to achieve group or organizational goals
What is a leader?
An individual who is able to exert influence over other people to help achieve group or organizational goals
What is a personal leadership style?
- specific ways in which a manager chooses to influence others
- shapes the way that manager approaches others
What is legitimate power?
- The authority that a manager has by virtue of his or her position in an organization’s hierarchy
- “Because I’m the boss.”
What is reward power?
- The ability of a manager to give or withhold tangible and intangible rewards
What is coercive power?
- Ability of a manager to punish others
- Verbal reprimands, pay cuts, dismissals
- Overuse of coercive power = dangerous working conditions & selection failure
What is expert power?
- power that is based on special knowledge, skils, and expertise that the leader possesses
- tends to be used in guiding or coaching
- can grow over time with practice
What is referent power?
- Power that comes from workers respect, admiration, and loyalty
- Possessed by managers who are likeable and whom workers wish to use as a role model
- Based on TRUST
What is a trait model?
- identifying personal characteristics that cause effective leadership
What is dominance?
Removing ambiguity; uncertainty
What is self-confidence?
Belief that you can get the job done
What is the behavior model?
Two basic types of behavior that many leaders use in order to influence:
- consideration
- initiating structure
What is consideration?
Behavior indicating that a manager trusts, respects, and cares about subordinates
What is initiating structure?
Managers making sure the job is done
What is a contingency model?
Whether or not a manager is an effective leader
What is Fiedler’s Model?
Effective leadership is contingent on both the characteristics of the leader and of the situation
- Describes two leadership styles: relationship oriented and task oriented
What is relationship-oriented style?
Leaders who want to develop good relationships with workers and be liked by them

Leaders whose primary concern is to ensure workers are performing at a high level and work gets done

What is leader-member relations?
Extent to which followers like, trust, and are loyal to their leader
What is task structure?
Extent to which the work to be performed is clear-cut so workers know what they are supposed to be doing
Position Power
Amount of legitimate, reward, and coercive power that a leader has by virtue of his or her position in an organization
What are path-goal leaders?
- Ones that ask about barriers to goals and figure out ways to clear those barriers
- Share the incentives of achieving the goal
What are directive behaviors?
Setting goals, tasks, showing workers how to complete tasks, steps to improving performance
