First state to declare secession. other deep south states followed
-place where Fort Sumter was installed, called U.S soldiers to evacuate fort cauz it was theirs
Crittenden’s Compromise
Proposed to stop secession alongside Constitutional amendments
1. guarnteeing slavery in south,
2. compensation for escaped slaves,
3. and preventing fed gov from regulating slave trade
- failed
Jefferson Davis
President that the seceding states met to organize new Confederate States of America
- planned to win a decisive victory in Union territory to end war
Fort Sumter, Charleston
Union planning resupply here, Confederates (South Carolina) demanding that Union troops abandon fort, and they attacked leading the Union to surrendered the fort starting the Civil War
- assault on this fort provoked many upper south states to join confederacy
Anaconda Plan
Hoped to cut off the Confederacy and hoped for limited conflict
- didn’t face issue of slavery in fear of border states leaving the Union
- planned to sorround and squeeze the Confederacy of their resources (deprived rivers, naval fights)
“Contraband Camps”
First Black partiipation organixzed here alongside promised a path to liberation
-diseases and malnutrition were rampant
-women and men required to perform drudge work of war, raising fortifications, cooking meals, and laying railroad tracks

Peace democratics that fought against War Democrats and Republicans
- sympathetic to Confederacy, exploited public antiwar
Homestead Act
640 acres (1/4 of acres for every person =160) provided public FREE land in western terrirotires to eligble citizens who was willing to settle/improve land
- helped populate American West, displacement of Native American tribes
-10% of land is given away for FREE
General George McClellan
Debated strategy to protect Washington and capture Richmond, overestimating Confederate strength leading to Robert E. Lee counterattacking and McClellan retreating
- overly cautious man who overestimated the Confederacy’s number
- “war democrat”
