- southern women led efforts to bury and memorialize dead, praising and bolstering men’s masculinity through nationalist speeches and memorials
- allegiance to Confederacy and opposition to Black rights
Lost Cause
A narrative that tried to rewrite history of the Antebellum South to deemphasize brutality of slavery
- created myth’s that Civil War fought over state’s right instead of slavery
Ku Klux Klan
Most notorious organization that emerged, synonymous with anit- Black violence alongisde other whie supremacists including Redshirts
- terrorize African Americans and Republicans throughout the South
- overlapped with criminal gangs or former Confederate groups
- killed many white politicans who supported freedpeople’s civil rights. ppl also had homes raided or bad things happened to them
The Enforcement Acts of 1870-1
Criminal to deprive African Americans of their civil rights
- deemed the KKK as acts of rebellion against US
- Use of U.S. troops to protect freedpeople
Depression of 1873
Caused by railraod speculation, demonteziation of silver, fires in Chicago and Bostom
- 6 year recession crushing Northern working class
- led Democratic control of House, contributing to the end of Reconstruction
- supplanted Reconstruction as foremost issue on national agenda
Stalwart Republicans/New Departure Democrats
Promises to combat rampant governemnt corruption and economic problems, ignored problems of racism and legacy of slavery
- idealism of civil rights -> practicality of economics and party politics
- (ND) = gained strength by distancing selfs from pro-slavery Democrafts and Copperheads (Redeemers)
Redeemers
South name for the: New Departure Democrats
Regained white supremacist control of Southern politics state-by-state
- won political control and ended Reconstruction in Tennesse, Virginia, and Georgia
Compromise of 1877
Make Hayes president but withdraw all Federal troops from South, brinding an end to Reconstruction
- allowed southern Democrats return to power
