Chapter 14&15 Vocab Flashcards
Arrhenius Acid
substance that forms H+ (or H3O+) ions in aqueous solution
Arrhenius Base
substance that forms OH- ions in aqueous solution
Bronsted Acid
substance that donates a proton (H+)
Bronsted Base
substance that accepts a proton (H+)
Conjugate Acid
substance formed after a base accepts a proton (H+)
Conjugate Base
substance left afer an acid donates a proton (H+)
pH
power of hydrogen
Salt
compound formed from the positive ion of a base and the negative ion of an acid
Indicator
a compound whose color changes with the pH; they are either a weak acid or weak base so when you put it in water it makes ions
Transition Interval
the range in concentration over which a variation in a chemical indicator can be observed
Titration
addition of a solution of known concentration to a solution of unknown concentration until completely reacted
Endpoint
the point in a titration at which a marked color change takes place
Binary Acid
an acid that does not contain oxygen; such as hydrochloric acid (HCl)
Amphoteric
can act as a proton donor (acid) or proton acceptor (base); such as water
Hydronium Ion
an ion consisting of a proton combined with a molecule of water; H3O+
