12 & 13 Vocab Flashcards
The dissolving medium in a solution
Solvent
The substance dissolved in a solution
Solute
A solution that cannot dissolve any more solute under the given conditions
Saturated solution
A solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution contains under the same conditions
Unsaturated solution
A substance that contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution contains under the same circumstances
Supersaturated solution
Particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and suspensions
Colloid
If the particles in a solvent are so large that they settle out unless the mixture is constantly stirred or agitated
Suspension
A metal made by combining two or more metallic elements
Alloys
When particles are large enough to scatter light
Tyndall effect
A substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts an electric current
Electrolyte
A substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that does not conduct an electric current
Nonelectrolyte
Liquids that are not soluble in each other
Immiscible
Liquids that dissolve freely in one another in any proportion
Miscible
The solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportioned to the partial pressure of that gas on the surface of the liquid
Henry’s Law
Mass solute /
Mass solute * solvent
