Chapter 13: Membrane Channels and Pumps Flashcards
Uniporter
Secondary transporter that moves one substrate across the cellular membrane by solely using the chemical potential of the substrate as their driving force
Symporter
Secondary transporter that moves two different molecules across the cell membrane in the same direction
Antiporter
Secondary transporter that moves two different molecules or ions across the cell membrane in opposite directions
Primary active transporter
Directly uses a source of chemical energy such as ATP to move molecules across a membrane against their gradient
Secondary active transporter
Uses energy stored in the electrochemical gradients created by primary active transporters to move other substances against their own gradients
P‑type ATPases
P-type ATPases are primary transporters that interconvert between E1 and E2
They are capable or auto-phosphorylation and form a phosphorylated aspartate intermediate
Involved in the transport of ions and phospholipids
ABC transporters
Transport a variety of compounds like lipids, drugs and vitamins across the plasma membrane OUT of the cell
