Chapter 13 Meiosis Flashcards
why do many organisms undergo asexual reproduction?
to quickly make exact copies. no variation
Why is sexual reproduction so important?
Variation of genes, able to adapt to different environments easier
Define meiosis
division of sex cells. results in daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes from the original parent
What is haploid cells?
1 version of each type of chromosome. 1 allele on each gene.
what is diploid cells?
2 of each type of chromosomes
what is polyploid
3+ copies of each chromosome. a lot of allele
what is a sex chromosome?
genetic info associated with individual sex
what are autosomes?
non-sex chromosomes
what are un-replicated chromosomes?
a single coply of DNA with protein
what are replicated chromosomes
copied chromosomes joined at the centrosomes
Sister chromatids?
each copy within a chromosome
what is a non-sister chromatids?
Chromatids in homologous chromosomes
What is a tetrad?
Replicated homologous chromosomes that are joined together
What happens in meiosis 1
chromosomes are replicated, homologous chromosomes pair, identical portions swapped at random, then the rest is the same as mitosis
What is crossing over?
identical portions swapped
