Ch.10 Photosynthesis Flashcards
what is the chemicals equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O to light to C6H12O6 + 6O2
why is photosynthesis important to humans?
fuel, food, fabrics, clothes, air, animal feed, etc.
what is the thylakoid?
flat disks
what is Grana?
stack of thylakoids (pancake stacks)
what is stoma?
fluid inside (Calvin Cycle)
what is Lumen?
continuous aqueous phase enclosed by the thylakoid membrane
what role doe pigments play in photosynthetic process
Interacts with light and powers the light dependent.
where in the chloroplast does the light dependent reaction takes place?
photosystem to the reaction system
where in the chloroplast does the Calvin cycle occur?
Stoma (liquid)
how do electrons become excited
The farther the electron is from the core, the easier it is to excite. through this the electron is knocked from the inner shell to the outer shell
what does a photosystem do?
Absorbs wave lengths
Explain how the electron transport train works
photon hits a molecule, excited electron is bounced around and into a reaction center, electron is picked up and taken to the electron transport train where this happens all over again.
What are the 3 stages of the Calvin Cycle?
Carbon fixation, carbon reduction, and ribulose regeneration
what is the role of rubisco?
to catalyze the first step in the Calvin cycle
What is the process of photorespiration?
A very high concentration of oxygen, this process does not result in ATP, CO2 decreases
