What is social psychology?
Study of how people influence others’ behavior, beliefs, and attitudes
What is the need-to-belong theory?
The biologically based need for interpersonal connections; we seek out social bonds when we can
What is social comparison theory?
We seek to evaluate our abilities by comparing them with those of others
What is mass hysteria?
A contagious outbreak of irrational behavior that spreads
What is social contagion?
Reacting to a situation in the same way the people around you are reacting; being influenced by your surroundings
What are attributions?
Process of assigning causes to behavior
What are internal (dispositional) influences?
An event or a person’s behavior is due to personal factors such as traits, abilities, or feelings
What are external (situational) influences/
A person’s behavior is due to situational factors
What is the fundamental attribution error?
Tendency to overestimate the impact of dispositional influences on other people’s behavior
What is conformity?
Tendency to alter our behavior as a result of group pressure
What is unanimity?
Number of people in a room that disagree with us, has a strong power to influence us; Increased as the size of majority increased
