What is stress?
Tension, discomfort, or physical symptoms that arise when a stressor strains our ability to cope effectively
What is a traumatic event?
Stressor so severe that it can produce long-term psychological or health consequences
What is primary appraisal?
Initial decision regarding whether an event is harmful
What is secondary appraisal?
perceptions regarding our ability to cope with an event that follows primary appraisal
What is problem-focused coping?
Coping strategy by which we problem solve and tackle life’s challenges head-on
What is emotion-focused coping?
Coping strategy that features a positive outlook on feelings or situations accompanied by behaviors that reduce painful emotions
What are hassles?
Minor annoyances that strain our ability to cope;
Related to physical health, depression and anxiety
What is General Adaptation syndrome (GAS)?
Pattern of response to stress
What is alarm reaction?
Autonomic nervous system is activated, stress hormones released, physical symptoms of anxiety
What is flight-or-fight response?
Physical and psychological reaction that mobilizes people and animals to either defend themselves or escape
What is resistance?
Adapt and find ways to cope with stressor
What is exhaustion?
In prolonged stressors, our resistance can break down
What is social support?
Relationships with people and groups that can provide us with emotional comfort and personal and financial resources
What is informational control?
Ability to acquire information about a stressful event
What is proactive coping?
Anticipation of problems and stressful situations that promotes effective coping
What is emotional control?
Ability to suppress and express emotions
What is catharsis?
The disclosing of painful feelings;
Can be useful, but only if it involves problem solving and efforts to make situations “right”
What is hardiness?
Set of attitudes marked by sense of control over events, commitment to life and work, and courage and motivation to confront stressful circumstances
What is ruminating?
Focusing on negatives and endlessly analyzing what caused problems
What is flexible coping?
Ability to adjust coping strategies as the situation demands is critical to contending with many stressful situations
