Chapter 13-14 Vocab Flashcards
Define homogeneous.
2+ different substances in a single phase with uniform composition.
Define heterogeneous.
More than 2 clearly different components (and therefore more than 2 phases)
What is a solution?
A homogeneous mix of 2+ substances in a single phase.
What is a solvent?
Present in greater amount; does the dissolving.
What is a solute?
Present is lesser amount; that is which is dissolved
What is a suspensions? Example
When particles of a solid are too large to dissolve and they settle (heterogenous).
Muddy water
Orange juice with pulp
What is the Tyndall Effect?
Used to determine between a colloid and a true soln
Define electrolytes. Example
Dissolve in soln to produce ions and will support electric current; usually ironically bonded
NaCl
Define nonelectrolytes. Example
Dissolve in soln but will not support electric current; usually covalently bonded
Sugar
How is Increased Surface Area achieved?
Achieved by crushing or grinding a solute into fine particles.
What is Agitation?
Stirring or shaking the solute/solvent
What is change T of Solvent?
Increase T will make collisions between solute and solvent to be more energetic and frequent.
Define Solubility.
At some point, a given volume of solvent (water) can’t dissolve more solute.
Define Saturated Solution
One that had dissolved the maximum amount of solute that it can for it T and V.
Define Unsaturated Solution.
One that is still able to dissolve more solute for a given T and V
