11-1 Flashcards
What was the prob. w/ the rxns?
2L + 1L = 2L
2:1:2 ratio was observed no matter what the V unit (liter or mL)
What 2 rxns did Gay-Lussacs study?
Hydrogen + Oxygen = Water Vapor
Hydrogen + Chlorine = Hydrogen Chlorine
State Gay-Lussac’s Law of combining Volumes of Gas.
“At constant T and P, the volumes of gases reactants and their products can be expressed as ratios of small, whole numbers.”
State Avogadro’s law.
“Equal V of gases at the same T and P contain equal numbers of molecules.”
How did Avogadro define diatomic gases?
He defined diatomic gases as elements that are gases at room T, not including Noble Gases.
What is Standard Molar Volume?
The Volume of 1mol of ANY gas at STP.
What are the Standard Molar Volume values?
Equal to 22.4 L, 22,400mL, cc, cm3
New conversion:
1 mol/22.4 L OR 22.4 L/ 1 mole
Which idea of Dalton’s did Avogadro reject?
He rejected the idea that ALL atoms were individual particles.
What did Avogadro hypothesis?
He hypothesized that some of these particles existed as pairs which he referred to as “diatomic”.
Formula of molar mass
Molar mass = D x 22.4L
D = mass/volume
Explain ideal gas law
Describes the mathematical relationship between P, V, T and also number of mols of a gas.
Ideal gas formula.
Define R
PV = nRT
R- the ideal gas constant
= .0821 ATM • L / Mol • k
What is the constant value of R?
.0821 ATM • L/ MOL • K
