Chapter 12: Heart and Peripheral Vascular System Flashcards
Murmur variables
time and duration, pitch, quality, intensity, location
vascular heart disease
disorder of heart valve (does not open or close completely)
angina pectoris
chest pain caused by ischemia of myocardium; can occur during activity, stress, or exposure to intense cold (increased stress on heart)
unstable angina
new chest pain, experienced when resting, or worsening pattern; occurs more frequently and easily provoked by minimal or no exertion during sleep or rest
acute myocardial infarction
worst chest pain, lasts longer than 5 min; death of myocardial cells
heart failure
when either ventricle fails to pump blood efficiently into aorta or pulmonary arteries
pericarditis
inflammation of pericardium
venous thromboembolism
includes both deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
when a clot develops within a vein
thrombophlebitis
inflammation of a vein accompanied by a clot
peripheral artery disease (PAD)
develops from arterial insufficiency
chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)
due to incompetent valves (changes in venous wall, congenital, or other event like DVT)
