Chapter 12 Effective Interdisciplinary Teams Flashcards
Human Resources management
hanging the human capital of an organization
Yield ratio
ratio of people who progress from one step to the next in the hiring process
Disparate impact
When a group if unintentionally disfavored in hiring process, if it can be proven that this capability is materially related to job success then it is legal
Disparate treatment
Intention exclusion of particular groups of people from the hiring process and this is not legal
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
requires employers to pay 1.5 times the normal salary (“time and a half”) for any hours over 40 per week
“interacting group” method
-way of group decision making
-unstructured discussion and then some form of voting
-drawbacks: effort to organize and maintain group, groups often motivated to reach a conclusion, central tendency effect (or groupthink), groups lower on hierarchy than others may feel pressured to stay silent, aggressive personalities have undue influence
Nominal group technique (or estimate-talk-estimate)
-problem stated by group leader, each team write down idea on paper (silently), everyone presents in round-robin order, after discussion, silent voting period
-advantage, everyone is heard
Delphi method
-asynchronous architecture
-anonymous survey with open-ended quarionnaires to all participates
-responses are aggregated and summarized for group and redistributed
-continues for 3-5 rounds until consensus is reached
Consensus mapping
-particular technique for sequencing and clustering a set of activities into an action plan: assumes list of ideas has already been created and vetted for accuracy
-small group clusters tasks into categories, small groups come to consensus, group leader creates straw man map, map reconfiguration step, map consolidation
Prediction markets
-group management process
-participants are given money to play with, proposed ideas are bought and sold and traded at market rates
-ideas that are more popular will increase in price, and less popular ideas will decline; when prices reach equilibrium top ideas are selected
-drawback is this requires significant degree of infrastructure
Parliamentary procedure
=way to keep large groups on top and make sure all participants have chance to speak
-Robert’s Rules of Order is a popular book describing parliamentary procedure
-moderate follows established rules to determine who may speak at what time and on what topic
