Chapter 12 Flashcards
Angular Velocity=
Angle (in rad)/Time
Linear Velocity (Given angular velocity)=
Radius x Angular Velocity
Centripetal Force=
mv²/r
What type of force do masses in a gravitational field experience?
A force of attraction.
What is a uniform field?
A field that is the same everywhere.
What type of fields do point masses have? (such as the earth)
Radial Field.
What is Newtons’ law of gravitation? (equation)
Fgrav=-GmM/r²
Gravitational field strength=
Fgrav/m
Egrav=
mgh
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy can be transferred from one form to another but the total amount of energy in a closed system will not change.
How would you work out the max height reached by a projectile given only the initial velocity?
1/2mv²=mgh
In a radial field, what is the relationship between g and r?
g is inversely proportional to r².
What happens to gravitational energy as you move away from the earth?
You gain gravitational potential energy.
What do equipotentials show?
All the points in a field which have the same potential. Equipotentials and field lines are perpendicular.
What is the satellite?
Any smaller mass that orbits a much larger mass.
