Substance other than food that when taken in small quantities, alters one’s, physical, mental, or emotional state
Drug
Inappropriate use of prescription or nonprescription drugs
Drug Misuse
Taking of a drug for non-medically approved purposes; continued use of a lethal drug with the knowledge that it is hazardous to one’s health
Drug Abuse
When one feels that a particular drug is necessary for normal functioning
Drug Dependence
A psychological state in which discontinued drug use results in clinical illness
Physical Dependence
A non-evaluative term referring to drug taking behavior in general, any drug taking behavior
Drug Use
A psychological state characterized by am overwhelming desire to continue use of a drug
Psychological Dependence
Consuming five or more drinks in a row for males and four or more drinks on a row for females
Binge Drinking
One for whom alcohol consumption results I’m a medical, social, or other type of problem
Problem Drinker
A disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupied with drinking, and continued use of alcohol despite adverse consequences
Alcoholism
The percentage of concentration alcohol in the blood
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
A federal law that requires stated to set the minimum legal age for purchasing tobacco products at 18 years and requires states to enforce this law
Synar Amendment
Tobacco smoke in the ambient air

Dried plant, part of the hemp plant, Cannibis sativa

Polydrug use
A pattern of behavior characterized by apathy, loss of effectiveness, and a more passive, introverted personality
Amotivational syndrome
Drugs derived from or chemically related to opinion, that reduce pain and induce stupor, such as morphine
Narcotics
Physiological and enzymatic adjustments that occur I’m response to the chronic presence of drugs, which are reflected in the need for ever-increasing doses
Tolerance
The psychoactive ingredient in the leaves of the coca plant, Erythoxolyn coca, which, when refined, is a powerful stimulant/euphoriant
Cocaine
A drug that increases the activity of the central nervous system
Stimulant
Providing information about drugs and the dangers of drug abuse, changing attitudes and beliefs about drugs, providing the skills necessary to abstain from drugs, and ultimately changing drug abuse behavior
Drug Abuse Education
(For drug abuse and dependence) care that removes the physical, emotional, and environmental conditions that have contributed to drug abuse and/or dependence

Aftercare
The guiding principles and courses of action pursued by governments to solve practical problems affecting society
Public Policy

The agency within the Department of Health and Human Services that provided leadership in drug abuse prevention and treatment. It houses the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment

The federal government’s lead agency for drug abuse research, one of the National Institutes of Health
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
The federal agency in the Department of Justice that regulated alcohol and tobacco
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)
School-based drug education programs to assist students who have alcohol or other drug problems
Student Assistance Programs (SAPs)
School-based programs in which students discuss alcohol and other drug-related problems with peers
Peer Counseling Programs
A workplace drug program designed to assist employees whose work performance is suffering because if a personal problem such as alcohol or other drug problems
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
