Chapter 11: Understanding Safety Procedures Flashcards
Computers both ____ and _____ electricity
Use and Store
Two elements of a workstation that should never be touched, what because the power they’re storing can kill you
CRT or LCD Monitors
Power Supplies
Before opening a PC, always first _____
Ensure it’s turned off.
Leaving it plugged in is usually fine, and many times actually preferred because it grounds the equipment and can help prevent electrostatic discharge.
You should turn off a computer whenever replacing parts, except when _____
You’re working with hot-swappable components
If you have to open a monitor, you must first discharge the high-voltage charge on it by using a _____
high-voltage probe
high-voltage probe
This probe has a very large needle, a gauge that indicates volts, and a wire with an alligator clip.
How do you discharge a monitor with a high-voltage probe?
Attach the alligator clip to a ground (usually the round pin on the power cord). Slip the probe nee- dle underneath the high-voltage cup on the monitor. You will see the gauge spike to around 15,000 volts and slowly reduce to 0 (zero). When it reaches zero, you may remove the high- voltage probe and service the high-voltage components of the monitor.
Safety requirements for printers
Do not turn toner upside down. It gets messy.
Don’t look into the laser of a laser printer
Don’t blow on the ink cartidge of an inkjet
Don’t burn yourslelf.
Safety issues with keyboard / mice
You can trip on their cords
Spilling liquid on the keyboard can short it out.
ESD
electrostatic discharge
