A

It pleased most people, except extremists on both sides. The Catholic Pope Pius V excommunicated Queen Elizabeth and told people not to obey her. Because of this Queen Elizabeth became more strict towards Catholics.

A

Catholic priests could be executed. The fine for recusants (people who didn’t attend church services due to Protestantism) as greatly increased which made them leave the country. This established the Protestant fate.

A

She was the son of James V of Scotland, and became queen in 1542. She was catholic and married many times (to a French king in 1558, then to an English lord in 1565, and then to Earl Bothwell 1567)

A

Her second husband (the English lord) was brutally killed and the people that rebelled thought she had connections with the death.

A

It lead to Mary fleeing and making her son James VI king in 1568. She fled to England hoping that Queen Elizabeth could help her.

What was the Babington Plot?

A

It was a plot made by Catholic Anthony Babington in 1586, to secretly kill Elizabeth and make Mary of Scotland queen. He needed a way to communicate with Queen Mary

How did Babington contact Mary of Scotland? What happened with it?

A

Babington made Mary’s servants hide secret letters in beer barrels that were taken to her room. These letters were written in code. Mary wrote back and agreed to the plan. The letter was caught by Sir Francis Walsingham, who showed it to Elizabeth.

What happened after the babington plot was exposed?

A

Attempts to kill the monarch is called treason. Elizabeth didn’t want to kill Mary, but eventually her secretary in 1587 slipped the death warrant in some papers she had to sign, and Mary was executed.
