Stereotype
Cognitive representation or schema about a social group
Prejudice
Negative feelings directed toward members of a group based solely upon group membership.
Discrimination
Negative or harmful behaviors directed towards members of a group solely upon their group membership.
Modern racism
A prejudice that is directed at other racial groups that exists alongside the rejection of explicitly racist beliefs.
Racism is very hard to measure. True or False?
True. But there are scales that exist such as the modern racism scale.
Implicit Association Test (IAT)
Used to assess implicit, unspoken, or unconscious beliefs, values, or attitudes regarding any number of issues including ethnic groups and gender.
Why do we engage in stereotypes, discrimination, and prejudice?

Humans have the tendency of categorizing people into ingroups (the group one identifies and belongs to) and outgroups (the group one does belong to or identifies with).
What does the cognitive perspective say about S, P, and D?
S, P, and D are all about information processing. That stereotype knowledge has a long cognitive history and is likely to be automatic.
What is attributional ambiguity?
Are the outcomes in a particular situation due to you or are they due to prejudice/discrimination?
Self-fulfilling prophecy?
People act toward members of a group in ways that encourage the behavior that they expect.
Stereotype threat
People’s fear of confirming the stereotypes that others have regarding a group which they are a member of
What is the contact theory?
Contact between hostile groups will reduce prejudice when certain conditions are met.
