Type 2 diabetes
The most common type of diabetes, in which the body is able to produce insulin, but it may not be enough or the body cells may be unable to use it.
Type 1 diabetes
An autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system destroys insulin-producing cells
Asthma
A chronic lung disease that involves episodes of airflow obstruction
Dyslexia
A category of learning disabilities involving a severe impairment in the ability to read and spell
Dysgraphia
A learning disability that involves difficulty in handwriting
Dyscalculia
Also known as developmental arithmetic disorder; a learning disability that involves difficulty in math computation
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd)
A disability in which children consistently show one or more of the following characteristics: 1-inattention, 2-hyperactivity, and 3-impulsivity
Articulation disorders
Problems in pronouncing sounds correctly
Voice disorders
Disorders reflected in speech that is hoarse, harsh, too Lou’s, too high pitched, or too low pitched
Fluency disorders
Various disorders that involve what is commonly called “stuttering”
Low vision
Visual acuity between 20/70 and 20/2000
Educationally blind
Unable to use ones vision in learning and must use hearing and touch to learn
Oral approaches.
Educational approaches to help hearing impaired children; they include lip reading, speech reading, and whatever hearing the child has
Manual approaches
Educational approaches to help hearing impaired children; they include sign language and finger spelling
Orthopedic approaches
Restrictions in movement abilities due to muscle, bone, or joint problems
Cerebral palsy
A disorder that involves a lack of muscle coordination, shaking, and unclear speech
Emotional and behavioral disorders
Serious, persistent problems that involve relationships, aggression, depression, fears associated with personal or school matters, as well as other inappropriate socioemotional characteristics
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs)
Also called pervasive developmental disorders;disorders that’s angel from the severe disorder labelled autistic disorder to the milder disorder called asperger syndrome. Children with these disorders are characterized by problems with social interaction, with verbal and nonverbal communication, and with repetitive behavior
Autistic disorder
A severe autism spectrum disorder that has its onset in the first three years of life and includes deficiencies in social relationships, abnormalities in communication, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
Asperger syndrome
A relatively mild autism spectrum disorder in which the child has relatively good verbal language, milder nonverbal language problems, and restricted range of interests and relationships.
Public law 94-142
The education for all handicapped children act, created in 1975, which requires that all children with disabilities be given a free, appropriate public education and which provides the funding to help with the costs of implementing this eduaciton
Individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA)
The IDEA spells out broad mandates for services to all children with disabilities
renaming of Public Law 94-142
These include evaluation and eligibility determination, appropriate education and the individualized education plan (IEP), and educaiton in the least restrictive environment (LRE)
Individualized education plan (IEP)
A written statement that spells out a program tailored to a child with a disability. The plan should be 1-related to the child’s learning capacity, 2-specially constructed to meet the child’s individual needs and not merely a copy of what is offered to other children, and 3-designed to provide educational benefits
Least restrictive environment (LRE)
The concept that a child with a disability must be educated in a setting that is a similar as possible to the one in which children who do not have a disability are educated
Inclusion
Education a child with special educational needs full-time in the regular classroom
