A
  • Most important sacred text
  • First 5 books of the bible (Christian Old Testament)
  • Also includes the oral Torah (how to be a Jew)

How were their beliefs passed down before?

A

The history and beliefs of the Jewish people were first passed down from generation to generation through spoken word. Eventually people began to write it down. People believe it was written by many people; repetition.

How is the Torah used in worship?

A

-Every Friday is Shabbat, when a part of the Torah is read.
-On festivals, dspecial sections are read
-Rabbis say it should be read thrice a week (Mon, Thurs, Sat)
-When the Torah is taken from the Ark, people chant verses
-It is held in scrolls and a pointer is used to read from it (no touchy)

What is the oral Torah?

A

Discussions on the written Torah that are contained in 3 texts: The Mishnah, The Talmud, The Midrash.

  • Mishnah: Written study of Torah. Instructions on legal matters
  • Talmud: Ideas and stories from Jewish Rabbis. Help apply laws
  • Midrash: Use examples from life to explain difficult parts of Torah
