What are custodial, rehabilitation, reintegration models?
-Custodial: Restrictive, max prison, highest level of restriction
-Rehabilitation: Reform programs, therapeutic
-Reintegration: less safety concerns, more visitation
What are the 5 acceptable uses of force in prison?
Self defense, defense of a third person, to uphold prison rules, to prevent crime, to prevent an escape
What are some issues in women’s prisons?
Sexual misconduct, limited educational/vocational programs, medical issues, children
What is an adaptive role in prison for women?
Creating pseudo-families in prison
What is the inmate code?
The values and norms of the prison social system that define the inmates’ idea of the model prisoner: ways to stay protected from other inmates
What are adaptive roles in prison?
-“Gleaning”: Convicts who try to better themselves
-“Jailing”: Convicts who cut themselves off from the outside world
-Doing time: View prison as a break from their criminal careers; try to find comfort
-Disorganized criminal: Someone who can’t adjust to the prison life; less intelligent
How is the prison economy?
-Apart from the state providing food, clothes, and housing prisoners, amenities are sparse
-Prison store; can buy limited items
-Often has to smuggle contraband
-Traditional currency: cigarettes
What are some prison programs?
Educational programs, vocational education, medical services, rehab programs, prison industries
What is the classification of prisoners?
It determines the appropriate program for an individual prisoner

What are the factors to governing prisoners?
-The defects of total power
-Limitation on the rewards and punishments officials can use

What is the Prison Rape Elimination Act (2004)?
Established a zero-tolerance standard rape in prison; requires Bureau of Justice Statistics to conduct annual surveys to measure amount of rape in prison
