Chapter 11: Fundamentals of the Nervous System and Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
brain and spinal cord
occupies the dorsal cavity
interprets sensory inputs and dictates motor output based on reflexes, current conditions, and past experience
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
nervous system outside the CNS
consists of nerves and ganglia
nerves
bundles of axons
ganglia
collections of neuron cell bodies
spinal nerves
carry impulses to and from the spinal cord
cranial nerves
carry impulses to and from the brain
PNS sensory/afferent division
consists of nerve fibers that convey impulses to the CNS from sensory receptors located throughout the body
sensory somatic fibers
convey impulses from the skin, skeletal muscles, and joints
visceral sensory fibers
transmit impulses form the visceral organs
PNS motor/efferent division
transmits impulses from the CNS to effector organs that activate muscles to contract and glands to secrete
has two main parts
somatic nervous system
composed of somatic motor nerve fibers that conduct impulses form the CNS to skeletal muscles
aka voluntary nervous system
automatic nervous system (ANS)
consists of visceral motor nerve fibers that regulate the activity of smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, and glands
aka involuntary nervous system
