Active Listening
means being attentive to what a patient is saying both verbally and nonverbally
AIDET
- An acronym that provides prompts for effective communication during an interaction with a patient.
- Acknowledge, Introduce Yourself, Duration, Explanation, Thanks
Assertive Communication
- based on a philosophy of protecting individual rights and responsibilities
- Includes the ability to be self-directive in acting to accomplish goals and advocate for others
Interpersonal Communication
Interaction that occurs between two people or within a small group. Refers to both verbal and nonverbal
Communication
The sending or receiving of information
Compassion Fatigue
A combination of secondary traumatic stress and burnout experienced by professional and lay caregivers from witnessing patients’ traumatic experiences and stories of pain, fear, and suffering
Connotative Meaning
The shade or interpretation of the meaning of a word which is influenced by the thoughts, feelings, or ideas that people have about the word
Denotative Meaning
a word’s main meaning, not including the feelings and ideas that people may connect with that word
Empathy
The ability to understand and accept another person’s perspective
Sender
The person who delivers the message
Verbal Communication
Involves spoken or written words that conveys specific meaning as you combine words
Hand-Off Report
The verbal and written exchange of pertinent information during this transition of care
Interpersonal Variables
Things that influence communication
Ex: education level, role in healthcare, socioeconomic status, etc
Lateral Violence
- Also known as horizontal violence.
- Sometimes occurs in nurse-nurse interactions and includes behavior such as withholding information, making snide remarks, and demonstrating nonverbal expressions of disapproval
