Biological Factors of Aggression
Low serotonin- helps regulate mood, makes it more difficult to communicate with areas of the brain that control emotional responses(amygdala and prefrontal cortex)
Freud’s Death Wish
People possess a powerful death wish or drive, to cope with this unconscious desire people need to channel this energy in some direction, inward in self-destructive behaviour or outward, engaging in aggression toward other people
Catharsis
release of suppressed energy or emotion
Instinct theory of aggression
a theory that describes aggression as an innate biological drive
Hormones and Aggression
Males are more aggressive because of the hormone testosterone
Frustration-Aggression Theory
a theory that frustration always leads to the desire to behave aggressively and that aggression is caused by frustration, prevented from having something they want > aggression
Culture and Aggression
Collectivistic cultures are less aggressive than individualistic ones

focus on intergroup cooperation avoidance of competition and inhibition of emotions
