- longitudinal
- Time is introduced to capture the multiple concurrent stressors present in the family system and the stressors occurring sequentially across the lifetime (ie. The birth of a child that coincides with a housing relocation for work)

Olson’s circumplex model
A
- relevant cross-culturally
- Proper handling of stress and crisis can strengthen a family and help its intimacy grow
- Model was built of 3 empirically identified important dimensions of family function: cohesion, flexibility, and communication
- although the outside is bad and the middle is good, it’s important to understand that at certain stages of life and crises, you will need to move to different stages of the diagram
