Chapter 11 Flashcards
What does solubility refer to?
The maximum amount of that substance that can be dissolved in a given quantity of solvent at a certain temperature.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution which no more solute can be dissolved at that temperature.
What is one way of measuring solubility?
To determine the max mass of solute that can be dissolved in 100g of solvent at a particular temperature.
What does the solubility curve represent?
The relationship between solubility and temperature.
What does each point on the solubility curve represent?
A saturated solution.
What does any point below the solubility curve represent?
An unsaturated solution.
What is an unsaturated solution?
A solution that contains less solute than is needed to make a solution saturated at that temperature.
What is crystallisation?
When a sugar that will no longer stay dissolved comes out of solution as crystals.
What is supersaturation?
Contains more dissolved solute than in a saturate solution. Any point above the solubility curve.
What does solubility of a particular gas in a liquid rely on?
Temperature of the liquid and pressure of the gas.
As the temperature increases what happens to the solubility of the gas?
The solubility of the gas decreases. (less soluble)
With increasing pressure what happens to the solubility of the gas?
It increases.
What does the concentration of a solution describe?
The relative amounts of solute and solvent present.
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution in which the ration of solute to solvent is high.
What is a dilute solution?
A solution which the ration of solute to solvent is low.
