Chapter 11, 24, 25, etc.- Perinatal Education Flashcards
What are the goals of perinatal education?
Help parents become knowledgable consumers, take an active role in maintaining health during pregnancy and birth, and learn coping techniques for pregnancy, child birth, and parenting.
What is psychoprophylaxis?
Like lamaze - it uses the mind to prevent pain.
What is habituation?
A decreased response to stimuli.
What is effleurage?
The slow massage of the abdomen or another body part during contraction.
How else can we help with pain?
Focal point, imagery, thermal stimulation, positioning, music, etc.
pregnancy occurs because many adolescents fail to recognize their vulnerability to the consequences of their sexual activity and believe that pregnancy cannot happen to them. T/F?
True
If a pregnant woman ingests something like alcohol, the baby doesn’t get any of it. T/F?
FALSE - it has the same affects on the baby….like, anything she takes in!
Prego women who smoke - what happens?
Possible low birth weight, increased risk of abortion, learning disability, sids, etc.
What is distinctive about fetal alcohol syndrome?
The way they look, act, behave, etc.
What’s one of the problems with alcohol? Like..how much?
We don’t know, that’s the problem!
What does cocaine do to the baby?
It’s a stimulant, so it raises everything up and causes hyperarousal, —- HTN, increased alertness, tachycardia, tremors, anemia, etc.
Neonates exposed to cocaine in utero may exhibit CNS signs such as…
irritability followed by lethargy, alternating, between sleep and agitation, poor response to interaction with others, etc.
What do amphetamines do to the system? What do they do to baby?
They act like cocaine but last longer. They’re stimulants. They can cause cleft palate, congenital defects, agitation, diaphoresis, etc.
Paxil - recomended for depressed women during pregnancy. T/F?
False - no longer reccomended.
What is neonatal abstinence syndrome?
Infant withdrawal from maternal use of opiates during pregnancy.
What happens to the baby of an opiate addicted mom?
Overdoses, hypoxia, growth restriction, neuro problems, etc.
Can we give methadone or buprenorphine to pregnant moms?
Yeah, it’s safer.
Abortion - loss of pregnancy before the fetus is viable. T/F?
True
What is the most common cause of a spontaneous abortion?
Super severe congenital defects.
The first sign of a threatened abortion is…..
bleeding/spotting.
There is no evidence to support physical activity restriction to stop spontaneous abortion. T/F/
True
What is a threatened abortion?
It might happen.
What is an inevitable abortion/
It is GOING to happen soon
What is an incomplete abortion?
Some products of conception have been expelled, but some remain.
What is D&E?
Dilation and evacuation
What is a missed abortion?
Occurs when the fetus dies during the first half of pregnancy but is retained in the uterus.
What are complications of a missed abortion?
DIC and infection
What is a recurrent spontaneous abortion?
One that keeps happening - three or more.
What is DIC?
aka consumptive coagulopathy, it’s a life-threatening defect in coagulation. Low fibrinogen and platelets and longer aPTT.
What is an ectopic pregnancy?
When the fertilized egg doesn’t make it to the uterus. It gets stuck in the fallopian tube
What are symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy?
Missed period, positive pregnancy tests, abd pain, vaginal spotting.
What is placenta previa?
Marginal?
Partial?
Total?
Implantation of the placenta in the lower uterus.
Marginal = implanted in lower uterus but its lower border is >3cm from internal cervical os.
Partial = lower border of placenta is within 3 cm of internal cervical os but does not fully cover it.
Total = completely covers internal cervical os.
What is hydatidiform mole?
One form of gestational trophoblastic disease, occurs when trophoblasts (peripheral cells that attach the fertilized ovum to the uterine wall) develop abnormally.
