Chapter 11 Flashcards
Muscular System
Origin
The site of muscle’s attachment to the more stable bone
Insertion
The site of a muscle’s attachment to the more moveable bone.
Belly (Body)
The fleshy part of a muscle located between the origin and
insertion of a muscle.
Leverage:
- A mechanical advantage. The force created to achieve movement
Leverage Terms
Lever - A rigid structure that can move around a fixed point (called the
fulcrum).
Effort - The force which causes movement. (i.e. the muscle)
Load = Resistance
- The force which opposes movement
Coordination of Muscle Groups:
Agonist = Prime Mover
- The muscle that contracts to produce the desired movement.
Antagonist - The muscle that stretches and yields to the agonist.
Synergist - The muscle(s) that prevent unwanted movement and aid in the
movement of the agonist.
Fixator - The muscle(s) that stabilize the origin of the agonist.

Antagonist
The muscle that stretches and yields to the agonist.
Synergist
The muscle(s) that prevent unwanted movement and aid in the
movement of the agonist.
Fixator
The muscle(s) that stabilize the origin of the agonist.
