Human Resource Management

Affirmative Action
Increasing opportunities for minorities and women.
Reverse Discrimination
Discrimination against members of a dominant group. usually as a result of policies designed to correct previous discrimination against minority or disadvantaged groups.
ADA (American Disabilities Act)
The act of 1990 requires employers to give applicants with physical disabilities the same consideration for employment.
Equal Employment Opportunity Act (EEOA)
1972 amendment to Title VII.
Mandated record keeping procedures and strength ed the EEOC.
Civil Rights Act
- Expected to stamp out discrimination in the workplace.
Age Discrimination in Employment Act
1967 (ADEA) protects individuals 40 or older from workplace discrimination.
Job Analysis
Study of what employees do who hold various job titles
Job description
A summary of the objectives of a job, the type of work to be done, the responsibility and duties, the working conditions, and the relationship of the job to other functions.
Job Specifications
Written summary of the minimum qualifications required of workers to do a particular job.
Recruitment
Obtain a sufficient number of the right employees at the right time.
Selection
gathering information and deciding who should be hired, under legal guidelines, to serve the best interest of the individual and the organization.
Contingent workers
Seasonal, part time, independent workers.
Training and Development
All attempts to improve productivity by increasing an employees ability to perform. Training focuses on short term skills, where development focuses on long term abilities.
Orientation
Introduces new employees to the organization.
On the Job Training
employees learn by doing or watching others for a while.
Apprentice Programs
Learners works along side an experienced employee to master the skills
Off the job Training
Programs away from the workplace that develop and of a variety of skills
online training
employees complete online classes
Vestibule training
training done in schools where employees are taught on equipment similar to that used on the job.
Job Simulation
an environment that duplicates job conditions and tasks so trainees can learn skills.
Management Development
Train employees to become good managers.
Networking
Establishing and maintaining contacts with key managers in and out of an organization.
Mentor
An experienced employee who supervises and guides lower employees by being their sponsor
Performance appraisal
Measures employee performance against established standards in order to make decisions about promotions.
