Chapter 10 Vocab Flashcards
Avogadro’s hypothesis
qual volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of particles
Avogadro’s number
the number of representative particles contained in one mole of a substance; equal to 6.02 x 10^23 particles
empirical formula
a formula with the lowest whole-number ration of elements in a compound
molar mass
a term used to refer to the mass of a mole of any substance
molar volume
the volume occupied by 1 mole of a gas at standard temperature and pressure (STP)
mole (mol)
the amount of substance that contains 6.02x10^23 representative particles of that substance
percent composition
the percent by mass of each element in a compound
representative particle
the smallest unit into which a substance can be broken down without a change in composition, usually atoms, molecules, or ions
standard temperature and pressure (STP)
the conditions under which the bolume of a gas is usually measured; standard temperature is 0 C and standard pressure is 101.3 kPa, or 1 atmosphere (atm)
