Chapter 10 Transport systems 1 ( EOY) Flashcards
What are some examples of urban transport ?
Trains, Buses, Train track, Bus interchange, Taxi stand, MRT station, Road
What are are the characteristics of a transport system?
- Density of networks
- Quality of infrastructure
- Variety of transport modes
What is the function of transport systems?
To enable the movement of people and goods & services
What does a transport network consist of?
A transport network consists of nodes that are linked by routes.
What are nodes that is used in a transport network?
A node is a location that provides entry to the transport network.
What is the route?
It is the path for travel between nodes.
What are the 3 types of transport networks?
Local, Regional and Global
What is the relationship between the number of nodes and the density of the network?
The higher number of nodes, the denser the network. ( Making places for accessible)
What are the 3 characteristics of the quality of infrastructure?
Coverage, Capacity, Frequency, Convenience, Environmental sustainability (CCF)
What is the function of having coverage for quality of infrastructure?
Improves accessibility and convenience for the commuters.
What is the function of having capacity for quality of infrastructure?
More can be transported from one place to the other efficiently.
What is the function of having frequency for quality of infrastructure?
Services running on high frequency allows more people to travel from place to place efficiently.
Why do we need good quality of infrastructure?
Commuters can make seamless connections at interchanges. Public transport is also able to move a large number of people from one place to another at one time, reducing carbon footprint.
What is the variety of transport modes?
Public and private, motorised or non-motorised and shared mobility.
How does the variety of transport cater to the different categories of people?
Public transport could be subsidised for elderly and students, which would make it affordable for them. Private hire cars by apps on phones are easy and convenient, allowing people with physical disabilities to move from place to place in comfort.
Why are some places developed in major nodes?
Due to the concentration of activity in that place or the level of accessibility they offer.
What are some places that have a high concentration of activity?
CBD area, where offices are located. (People who work in offices go there daily, 5 days a week) or places that are more popular e.g orchard road vs punggo
What is the difference between unimodal transport and intermodal transport?
Unimodal transport is where movements are limited and people and good can only move between 2 points. While intermodal transport is where there are more ways by different transport modes and allows you to get to more destinations.
What is a point-to-point network?
It connects a set of locations directly without any interruption of services.
What is a Hub-and-spoke network? ( slide 54)
It connects every location through one intermediary called a hub.
