Chapter 10 The Work Of The Sea Flashcards
How does the sea erode?
(Define)
Hydraulic action
Attrition
Abrasion
What landforms are made by the sea?
Bays and headlands
Sea caves, arches, sea stacks, blowholes
Sea cliffs
How are bays and headlands formed?
When the sea erodes a coastline with bands of hard and soft rock.
The soft rock forms the bay and the hard rock forms the headland
How are sea cliffs formed?
The waves undercut the cliff with hydraulic action and abrasion.
A wave cut notch is formed. The face of the cliff falls down. A wave cut platform takes place.
How are arches etc made?
Joints and faults are weaknesses in the rock. Cracks appear. They are widened into caverns. Arches appear when two caves back to back on a headland come together. Sea stacks are formed when the arch collapses which shorten into sea stumps
