COMMUTING POLICING COMMITTEES

TYPES OF COMMUNITY COMMITTEES

Community policing committees are one of the best ways to establish and sustain a working partnership with the community. There are three general types of committees:

  1. The _______________________. This type of committee advises the police, who assume primary responsibility for responding to the specific issue at hand, this committee focuses on gathering information to then passing it along to the police. They require minimal structure, and meetings can be scheduled on a regular basis or as needed.
  2. The ____________________________. This type of committee partners with the police to identify areas of concern and to develop problem-solving responses. Committee members represent a broad cross-section of the community. These committees usually have an executive consisting of a chair, vice chair, secretaries, and treasure.
  3. The __________________________. These committees are composed of the police and other agencies and organizations in the community and have a mandate that includes a broad range of community and social issues. These committees formulate plans of action that maximize the expertise and efforts of the participating agencies and organizations. Interagency committees are the most complex type of police-community committee and require a formal operating structure, including an executive, standing committees, and subcommittees.
