What were the Alien and Sedition Acts??
Alien Laws: The Federalists raised the residence requirements from 5 years to 14 years.
Sedition Act: Anyone who impeded the laws of the government or falsely defamed its officials would be liable to a heavy fine and imprisonment. It expired in 1801 so it could not be used against the Federalists.
These acts may have been unconstitutional but they were passed by a mainly Federalist Congress and upheld in court due to a majority of Federalists. These acts were meant to limit the power of the Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans while Adams was in office.
