Chapter 10/ installing and configuring printers Flashcards
printer
447
A printer is an external hardware device responsible for taking computer data and generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are one of the most used peripherals on computers and are commonly used to print text, images, and photos.
printer types
447
the most common printers used with a computer are Inkjet and Laser printers, Thermal printer, impact printers.
Laser printers
460
laser printer use electrophotographic (EP) print process, they receive their print job one page at a time.
they utilizes a laser beam to produce an image on a drum. The light of the laser alters the electrical charge on the drum wherever it hits. The drum is then rolled through a reservoir of toner, which is picked up by the charged portions of the drum. Finally, the toner is transferred to the paper through a combination of heat and pressure.

electrophotographic (EP) printing process
464
Their are 7 steps for the printing process
step 1
464
Processing
step 2
465
- Charging – To make the drum receptive to new images, it must be charged. The EP drum is given a negative charge by the primary corona wire around -600 and -1000 volts
step 3
465
- Writing - A laser beam is use to write to the EP drum causing dots on the drum to lose some of the negative charge
and become relatively positive charge
step 4
465
- Developing - A toner is transferred from the toner cylinder to the EP drum by attracting the area of the drum that has a Relative positive charge
step 5
467
- Transferring - The transfer corona wire puts a highly positive charge on the paper once the paper has a positive charge
the negatively charge toner particle leaps from the drum into the paper
step 6
467
- Fusing - The compression roller and fusing roller press and melts the toner into the paper the fuser gets very hot
step 7
468
7- Cleaning – The Photosensitive drum is cleaned before it can take on a new image
Ink-jet ( bubble-jet )
450
The most popular printer for home computer users that prints by spraying streams of quick-drying ink on paper. The ink is stored in disposable ink cartridges, often a separate cartridge is used for each of the major colors. These colors are usually Black, Red/Magenta, Green/Cyan, and Yellow (CMYK).
Although inkjet printers themselves are often relatively inexpensive, the ink cartridges used in the printers can increase the overall cost of the printer.

thermal printer
469
A thermal impact printer or electrothermal printer is a printer that uses heated pins to “burn” images onto heat-sensitive paper. These printers are commonly used in calculators and fax machines; and although they are inexpensive and print relatively fast, they produce low resolution print jobs.

_Daisy wheel printer
_Dot-matrix printer
448
The term Dot matrix refers to the process of using dots to form an image. In a dot matrix image, the image quality is determined by the number of dots per inch.
poor image quality.
printer interface components
470
Serial parallel Universal serial Bus ( USB) Ethernet Wireless Infrared
Serial
471
it is rare to find a serial printer in use today due to slow data transmission speed
parallel
471
transfer data 8 bits at a time it is faster then serial
a parallel cable has DB25 connector that connect to the computer and a male 36 pin centronics connector that connect to the printer
the cable must be no more then 10’ long because if it is more then that the communication can become unreliable due to crosstalk.
USB
471
it is faster then serial and parallel, it is easy to connect.
Ethernet
471
printer with Ethernet connection has a wired Ethernet interface, they also have an internal network interface NIC card and ROM based software, we use RJ-45 for that.
Wireless
471
some printer have built in WiFi interface and other can accept wireless network card
the most popular of the wireless is Bluetooth, most devices will work within 10 meters ( 33 feet )
infrared
472
infrared transmissions are simply wireless transmissions use radiation in the infrared of the electromagnetic spectrum.
interface software
472
for the printer to communicate with the computer we need two software
page description languages (PDL)
Driver software
page description languages (PDL)
473
PDL is the computer language used with computer printers that instructs the computer printer how to properly print a page being sent from the computer. Each printer manufacturer has its own PDL.
there are several printer communication languages in existence, the most common:
postscript (PS)
printer command language ( PCL) is used with inkjet printer
Graphic device Interface (GDI)
driver software
474
A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or devices. Without drivers, the hardware you connect to your computer—for example, a video card or a printer—won’t work properly.
if the wrong printer drive is selected the computer will send commend in the wrong language and the printer will print garbage
