Capter 9/Understanding Laptops Flashcards
the display in laptop is
399
LCD, LED, OLED and Plasma
laptop case made of plastic
399
ABS plastic
laptop Mother board differences from desktop
399
lack of standards
daughterboard
400
small circuit board that is connected to the motherboard and save components like video
laptop processors are streamlined connected to motherboard
400
processor’s upgrading are not possible because the CPU’s are ether soldered to the motherboard or attached using Micro-FCBGA.
two ways to combat the heat of CPU are
401
lower the voltage and clock speed
PCMCIA card or PC card
411
Short for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association
we use expansion cards in desktop computers and we use PCMCIA card as an expansion card for a laptop.
Three types of PC cards
412
Type I card are 3.3 mm for memory
Type II card are 5mm for LAN and modem
Type III card are 10.5mm for hard disks
Express card/34 and Express card /54
413
Express Card is a new standard replacing the PC Card
supports USB 2.0 and up
hot-swappable
MINI PCI and MINI PCIe
413
Mini PCI was added to PCI version 2.2 for use in laptops; it uses a 32-bit, 33 MHz bus with 3.3 power connection support for bus mastering and DMA
3 type of Mine PCI
SODIMM
402
SO-DIMM, which is short for Small Outline DIMM, is available in both a 72-pin and 144-pin configuration.
USB port
414
flash card can hold 32GB of DATA
Mouse/ Keyboard port
414
USB port or PS/2
communication port
414
laptop come with a 802.11 wireless card or Bluetooth, Ethernet or other devices that can be add throw USB or PC card connection.
what is a Docking stations
415
Alternatively referred to as a universal port replicator, a docking station is a hardware device that allows portable computers to connect with other devices with little or no effort. Docking stations enable users with a laptop computer to convert it into a desktop computer when at the office or at home.
For example, a user could use their laptop on the road, and then back at the office they could connect the laptop to the docking station to use their monitor, speakers, and office printer
Power systems
416
laptop can use batteries or Adapter power from AC or DC
DC is used for the laptop components, but the backup light is powered with an AC Power
Batteries
416
different kind of batteries Nickel cadmium ( NiCd) , Lithium ion, and other
Power Adapter
418
we can use the AC power for laptop after we convert it into DC with a power adapter
video card
419
They are only Digital
backlight in the LCD display
420
cold cathode fluorescent lamp
Inverter
421
A power inverter, or inverter, is a circuit that changes direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) for the backlight to use, we find them in LSD because LED does not use a fluorescent lamp as a backlight. that is way the modern computer are trying to go with LED
Screen
420
LSD, LED , OLED and Plasma
WiFi antenna
421
today laptop has a built in WiFi which is 802.11 with out using an expansion card. the old laptop used
Cable locks
422
protection for the computer it is similar to a bike lock
Replacing laptop Components
we need to check the computer documentation before any replacement
426
laptop are not line desktop, we can not replace a lot of components on a laptop like we do for a desktop.
the number of components that can be replaced are not the same from computer to another on.
we an list some components:
keyboard, touchpad, processor, memory, expansion cards, hard drive, speaker, batteries and others
before starting any replacement we need to
turn off the computer
disconnect the computer and any peripherals from there power sources, and remove any installed battery
Replacing Hard drive
427
External storage devices like
SD memory card for gigabyte
external hard drive with a terabyte storage
Replacing memory
428
SODIMM or MicroDIMM
Upgrading wireless network cards
430
most network card are built in the motherboard chipset of laptop, so if that card fails or we want to upgrade, we can use one of the external portable network cards like USB memory card, PC network card.
if I have a built in network card 802.11b and I want to up grade I can replace it with a network external card 802.11g or 802.11n, Window should disable the old device automatically to avoid conflict or we can do it manually using Device Manager.
upgrading video card
431
if it is a built in card we can not replace it.
Replacing LCD components
431
we can replace many LCD components screen, backlight, inverter. when doing that we need to be carful for two things 1 the video circuitry 2 the network antenna wires
