Consanguineal Kinship
Kinship groups with a biological basis
Affinal Kinship
Kinship relations through marriage and remarriage
Fictive Kinship
Kinship we adopt and/or we foster
Descent Groups
Permanent social unit
- members have ancestors in common
Matrilineal Descent
Individuals automatically join mother’s descent group when they are born
Patrilineal Descent
Individuals automatically join father’s descent group when they are born
Lineage
Unilineal descent group based on demonstrated descent
Clan
Unilineal descent group based on stipulated descent
Neological Residence
Creating a new household and way of life apart from either family of origin
Nuclear Family
Consists of parents and children, normally living together in the same household
Extended Families
Families consisting of 3 or more generation
Family of Orientation
Family in which one is born in and grows up in
Family of Procreation
Formed when one marries and has children
Ego
Central character and starting point in tracking kinship relationships
