Chapter 10 - Codes Governing HNS Flashcards
Discuss your understanding when carrying volatile substances around
Volatile substances evaporate easily and refers to cargo that has a flashpoint of below 60 degrees. Flashpoint is the lowest temperature where there is flammable vapour enough to cause an ignition.
LEL - Lower explosive limit. Anything below the LEL is considered safe
UEL - Upper explosive limit. Anything above UEL is considered safe
Readings between LEL and UEL have explosion risk (ALLAHU AKBAR)
Ammonia LEL 15.5% UEL 26.2%
What is HME
HME refers to Cargoes that are hazardous to marine environment. It is determined by UN’s Globally Harmonised System (GHS) for its classification and labelling.
What is HNS
HNS is Hazardous Noxious Substances and is defined as any substances other than oil which , if introduced into the marine environment, is likely to create hazards to human and marine life, damage amenities and other legitimate users of the sea.
What is Bulk Liquid Transport
Requires sophisticated pipelines, specialised equipment & ship and crew training. Chemical tankers have separated stainless steel tanks which require specially coated paints which explains why it is expensive. One voyage can carry more than one type of chemical which is dangerous which is why proper segregation is needed
What are the 4 codes governing HNS in SOLAS
IGC - International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk
IBC - International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships carrying Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk
IMDG - International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code
IMSBC - International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargo Code
What does IBC do?
Set the international standards for safe carriage of dangerous chemicals
Prescribes the design, construction, and equipment of ships
Provide information on all hazardous substances, and the minimum requirements for ships to carry them
IBC is also Marpol Annex II
What is IMDG
Covers all noxious substances transported in containers or packaged form to ensure the safe carriage of goods and prevents pollution to the environment. Sets requirements of the packing, storage, marking, labelling and stowage to ensure safe loading of ships. IMDG is also Marpol Annex III
9 Classes in IMDG Code
Explosive Flammable gas Flammable liquid Flammable solid Oxidising agent Toxins and infectious substances Radioactive substances Corrosive substances Other miscellaneous substances that does not belong in the classes but can still pose a threat.
Common Chemicals
Sulfuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Nitric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Ammonia
SHNNN: SO4, HCL, NO3, NAOH, NH3
