What is Medicare
Australia’s universal health insurance scheme that gives all Australians, permanent residents and people from countries with reciprocal agreements access to affordable health care.
What is Medicare Levy
2 percent tax for all Australian tax payers to fund medicare.
What is Medicare Levy surcharge
An additional 1-1.5% tax on high income earners who do not have private health insurance.
Pharmaceuticals Benefits Scheme (PBS)
Provides essential medicine to people who need them, regardless of their ability to pay.
Private Health insurance
An insurance policy that helps pay for services not covered by Medicare.
What does Medicare cover (out of hospital expenses)
- Consultation fees for doctors and specialists.
- Most surgical procedures performed by a G.P.
-Tests and examinations needed to treat illness.
Services not covered by Medicare
-Ambulance services,
-Home nursing care or treatment,
-Most dental examinations. -Treatment in priv hospital medicare will cover 75% of schedule fee for treatment
Advantages of Medicare
- Choice of doctor for out of hospital services.
-Available to all Australian citizens.
-Reciprocal agreement between Australia and other countries allow Aus citizens to access free healthcare in selected countries.
Disadvantages of Medicare
-Waiting lists for many treatments.
-Doesn’t cover alternative therapies.

Advantages for PHI
-Enables access to private hospitals.
-Choice of doctor in private or public hospital.
-Shorter waiting times for some medical procedures such as elective surgery.
Disadvantages of PHI
-Costly
-Sometimes patients have to pay a ‘gap’ for whatever insurance does not pay.
-Qualifying periods apply for some conditions before the individual can make a claim on their health insurance.
