Chapter 10 Flashcards
Motion
An objects change in position relative to a reference point
Reference point
a basis or standard for evaluation, assessment, or comparison; a criterion.
Displacement
The change in position of an object
Speed
the rate at which someone or something is able to move or operate
Average speed
Average speed= total distance/Time
Instantaneous speed
the motion rate of object at a particular time period or moment
Velocity
the speed of something in a given direction
Resultant velocity
the vector sum of all given individual velocities
Acceleration
increase in the rate or speed of something
Centripetal acceleration
the rate of change of tangential velocity
Constant acceleration
change in velocity that doesn’t vary over a given length of time
Force
strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement
Net force
the sum of all the forces acting on an object
Balanced forces
two forces acting in opposite directions on an object, and equal in size
Unbalanced forces
Forces that cause a change in the motion of an object
Friction
the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another
Sliding friction
the resistance created by two objects sliding against each other
Rolling friction
the force resisting the motion when a body (such as a ball, tire, or wheel) rolls on a surface
Fluid friction
the resistance to an object’s motion through a liquid or gas
Static friction
the friction that exists between a stationary object and the surface on which it’s resting
Kinetic friction
the amount of retarding force between two objects that are moving relative to each other
