Chapter 10 Flashcards
Brown lines on a map that indicate the elocution of the terrain directly under the line
Contour lines
From map to compass, what do you do if you have an east declination (4° east)
What do you do if you have a west declination (4° west)
Subtract for east
Add for west
When going from a compass to a map, what do you do when the declination is towards the east? (4° east)
West?
Add declination for east
Subtract for west
You travel 200 meters on a bearing of 0°, then 400 meters on a bearing of 90°, how would you get back?
Take the back azimuth (+180) of the last bearing then the first:
270° for 400 m then 180° for 200 m
An advantage to GPS is:
Their ability to accurately ascend and track locations, not specific positions
This is goujd at the bottom of the map to help determine distances:
Bar scale
The perfected maps used by ground SAR teams are:
Topo maps
On a 1:24,000 scale map, one inch = how many feet?
2000
In order to traverse around an obstacle, how would you change your direction of travel via degrees?
Create a square:
Add 90° for right, subtract for left
Then make a right angle that matches your Origional bearing, (bottom side)
Continue until you pass the obstacle and make another right angle (left or right side)
Walk the same distance as the bottom side, turn into your Origional bearing and continue. (Top side)
A space based radio nav system consisting of satellites and ground stations used for monitoring and control:
GPS
1: Contour lines that are close together:
2: contour lines that have a v shape:
3: touching:
4: wide spread:
5: circle:
6: hatching
1: steep
2: stream beds or narrow ridges
3: cliff
4: not steep
5: hilltop
6: depression
A mile = how many feet
5280
In the geographic coordinate system Which way do parallels run?
East-west
What is it called when you use known references to locate a position: (1 mile north of my house)
Geographic mapping
What mapping system uses grid systems that cover the globe in Longitude and Latitude:
Which way does longitude run? (Meridians)
Latitude (parallels)?
Geographic Coordinate System
North-south
East-west
