Chapter 10 Flashcards
Cochlea
Spiraled shape structure that is filled with liquid and contains tiny hair cells
Eardrum
Rough membrane about .1mm thick that transmits sound from the outer ear to the middle ear
Intensity
The amount of energy that passes through a certain area in specific amount of time
Loudness
The human perception of sound volume- depends on sound intensity
Decibel
dB- unit of sound intensity
Pitch
Is how high or low a sound seems to be
Doppler Effect
The change in wave frequency due to a wave source moving relative to an observer or an observer moving relative to a wave source.
Music
Any collection of sounds that deliberately used n regular pattern
Sound quality
Describes thes differences between a sounds of the same pitch and loudness-results from overtones
Overtone
Vibration whose frequency is a multiple of fundlemental frequency
Resonator
A hollow chamber filled with air that amplifies sound when the air inside of it vibrates
Acoustics
Study of sounds
Echolocation
Process of locating objects by emitting sounds, and then interpreting the sound waves that are reflected from those objects
Sonar
A system that uses the reflection of underwater sound waves to detect objects
Ultrasound
A sound with a frequency above 20,000 hertz and cannot be detected by humans
