Ch29 Vocab Flashcards
Ellipse
Elongated, closed curve with 2 foci; shape of earth’s orbit around the sun
Sphere
Three dimensional, round object whose surface is the same distance from the center in every direction
Time Zone
Any one of 24 longitudinal strips on earth about 15 degrees wide on earths surface in which local time is the same
Rotation
Spinning of earth on its axis, used to measure time in days
Revolution
Motion of the earth around the sun, used to measure time in years
Ecliptic
Path of earths orbit around the sun, from earth, seen as the path that the sun travels across the zodiac
Solstice
Occurs twice a year, in June and in September, when earths oration tal axis is tilted the most towards or most away; from the sun
Equinox
Occurs twice a year, in march and in September when earths rotational axis is perpendicular to a line connecting the center of the earth to the center of the sun
Tide
The periodic rise and fall of sea level caused by the gravitational attraction among earth, moon, and sun
Moon Phase
Changing appearance of the moon as viewed from earth , depending on the relative positions of the sun, the moon, and the earth
Solar Eclipse
Occurs during the new moon, when earth enters the moons umbra and casts a shadow on the earths surface
Lunar Eclipse
Occurs during full moon when the moon enters the earths umbra and earth casts a curved shadow on the moons surface
Maria
Relatively flat, dark colored regions on the moons surface
Regolith
Layer of debris on the moons surface formed by the accumulation of meteoric material
