Chapter 10 Flashcards
What is intelligence?
The ability to use ones mind to solve problems and learn from experiences
What questions do psychologists have about intelligence?
How can it be measured, what exactly is intelligence, where does it come from, why are some people more intelligent than others
What test did Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon develop on intelligence?
The Intelligence test measures aptitude apart from achievement (remembering words etc.), used to identify students who needed remedial education
What test did William Stern develop?
The intelligence quotient test measures mental age, ratio IQ (dividing a persons mental age by physical and multiply by 100) and deviation IQ (dividing a persons test score by the average then multiply by 100)
What is the Wechsler intelligence scale for children and Wechsler adult intelligent scale?
The most widely used test that measures intelligence by asking people to solve problems and answer questions
What is Charles Spearman’s theory?
The two factor theory of intelligence suggest that every task requires a combination of general and specific skills
Why did Louis Thurstone disagree with the two factor theory?
There were a fee primary mental abilities that are stable and independent
What are the three level hierarchy under general intelligence?
Memory reasoning, verbal skill
What is a data based approach?
Connects intelligence test performance to clusters
What is theory based approach?
Surveys the human ability then determines which intelligence test measures (or fails to)
What is fluid intelligence?
The ability to see abstract relationships and draw logical inferences
What is crystallized intelligence?
The ability to retain and use the knowledge that was acquired through experience
What did Robert Sternberg propose?
Three kinds of intelligence called the triarchic theory of intelligence (analytic, creative, practical)
What is analytical intelligence?
The problem solving type is the ability to identify and define problems and to then find strategies to solve them
What is creative intelligence?
The novel solutions is the ability to generate solutions others cannot
What is practical intelligence?
Everyday solutions is the ability to implement these types of solutions in everyday settings
What is emotional intelligence?
The ability to reason about emotions and use those emotions to enhance reasoning
What are some qualities of emotional people?
Identify, describe and manage emotions to improve decision making, Identify emotions others are experiencing, having good social skills
What is genetic relatedness?
Having family members with similar levels of intelligence because they share genes. They also share environments
Describe the heritability coefficient?
A statistic that describes the difference between peoples IQ scores that differences in their genes can explain
What is the Flynn effect?
That average intelligence scores increase over the years. Children are smarter than their parents etc.
What is the correlation between genes and environment?
Our genes determine the range in which IQ will fall but environment will determine at which point it will fall
How do high and low IQ people differ?
High IQ people are less prone to mental illness
High IQ people are less prone to mental illness
Downsyndrome (presence of a third copy of 21st chromosome) and fetal alcohol syndrome (caused by a mothers excessive use of alcohol during pregnancy)
