Distinguish between permanent revolution and Socialism in one country
Permanent revolution - developed by Leon Trotsky, a socialist revolution cannot be confined to a single country, and that it must spread across the world to be successful
Socialism in one country - associated with Joseph Stalin, which argued that it was possible for socialism to be built in a single country without relying on revolution spreading internationally.
Name and explain the 2 ways Stalin was able to become party leader
Party positions;
- He was general secretery which allowed him to promote officials that were loyal to him
Cult of personlaity
- promoting a cult-like devotion to his image and ideas.
- He was able to frame himself as the next Lenin so everyone supports him
- He made Trotsky not attend Lenin’s funeral, by telling him the wrong date.
Briefly summarize how Stalin defeated the left in the power struggle
- Trotsky hesitated to go for Stalin as he was scared to be accused of causingt a split int he party
- Stalin used his position of general secretery which allowed him to promote officials that were loyal to him, like Kirov
- Gained support from Bukharin
- Trotsky clashed with his allies
Briefly summarize how Stalin defeated the right in the power struggle
- Due to food shortages, the NEP was becoming unsuccessful, so hate came on to Bukharin et al
- Due to debates over a slow or fast revolution, Stalina nd Bukharin clashed and Bukhrain considered a desperate attempt to side with Trotsky
- He was removed from positions of power then expelled from the party in 29’
