Chapter 10 Flashcards
Stereotype Threat
the idea that behaving stereotypically lends credibility and legitimacy to the existing stereotype threats; attempts to not behave stereotypically can subsequently confirm stereotype (requires cognitive energy to try to not behave stereotypically, thus score poorer in studies)
Women and Math Paradigm, Cassad et al (2010)
girls in stereotype threat group scored lower in math tests, had more negative attitudes, and fewer intentions to pursue further math education
Minority Group Paradigm
functions the same as women and math, perceived threat can be stressing importance of doing well
Stereotype threat only requires one’s __________ of ________ ___________, one does not need to have _____________ it.
awareness/knowledge of group stereotypes
experienced
Stone et al (1998) Black and White Athletes: 10 Holes of Mini Golf
When white participants were told study was of natural ability, whites did worse; when blacks were told study was of athletic strategic intelligence, they performed worse
Leyen et al (2000) Male Sensitivity Handicap
brought in males and females, watched interaction between man and wife with marital issues, told to find some of the signs of discomfort; test of interpersonal sensitivity–stereotype is that women are more sensitive
Stereotype Threat Effects will be present when…
stereotype is known
person to whom it could apply
outcome variables relating one to the other
person believes stereotype
Possible Explanations of Stereotype Threat:
Contextual or Situational Factors
situations where stereotype is salient; when there’s real or imagined pressure to do well
Possible Explanations of Stereotype Threat:
Importance of Domain
person must identify with domain and internalize domain for self, those most successful in domain are most threatened by stereotype threat
Possible Explanations of Stereotype Threat:
Awareness of Implications of Stereotype
person aware of stereotype, and aware it could apply to them; outgroup members know and use stereotype to judge person
Deconstructing Stereotype Threat
when someone’s domain feels threatened by stereotype, their concerns motivate them to identify and suppress the stereotype
Identification and Suppression
when under threat, attention and processing resources are divided between the task at hand and other psychological processes
