What is the short term trigger of the First World War?

A

The assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand

It was the 28th of June 1914 in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Gavrilo Princip and other members of black hand lined the streets ready with pistols and bombs in their pockets for the archduke Franz Ferdinand to drive down the roads.

The black hand was a band of unhappy nationalists who did not like the way Franz Ferdinand was treating the Serbs all the other nationalities in Bosnia.

Explain the downwards spiral into world war 1?

A

After both the archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated, Russia mobilised there army to go help the Serbs defend themselves for war from Austro-Hungary.

Russia only mobilised their army because they were allies.

Germany then declared war on Russia because Germany and Austria- Hungary were allies.

Then Germany declared war on France.

Then Germany invaded the neutral Belgium. Britain were unhappy that Germany was being so aggressive towards Belgium and stepped in by declaring war on Germany. And to complete it all Austria declared war on Russia.

What are the long term causes of WW1?

A

Empires

Germany was not happy about what parts of Africa she got and said that all the other European countries took the best bits before Germany could get there.

Arms race

Both Germany and Britain started competing to get more battle ships than one another. This only started because they both became very suspicious of their growing navy’s and wanted to be ready if there was a war.

Alliances

Countries began forming alliances because they were suspicious of each others power.
